Visual Thinking: New Strategies for Using Visual Material in the Digital Era

Teaching with visual materials has become a very different and much improved endeavor over the past decade. This is attributed to the exponential growth of the Web and the development of common imaging technologies. The “digital age” invites us to improve our methods of teaching by incorporating such modes of visual thinking into disciplines not traditionally thought of as being image based.
While subject matter across the disciplines remains field-specific, use of digital media of all types and visual thinking unite us and allow for the re-establishment of and, in some cases, the beginning of connections between disparate units on campus. This Faculty Learning Community will have the opportunity to explore strategies for capitalizing on the advantages digital format media offers in terms of ease of use, communication between departments on campus, new approaches to teaching, and many other pedagogical and research improvements.  Participants will gain access to existing media databases, including the Lamar Dodd School of Art Digital Image Database.  At the same time, the Community will work together to consider ways of improving existing systems of sharing media and exploring the University of Georgia’s potential to be cutting-edge during this revolution.

This Faculty Learning Community will be led by Emy Decker, Director of Visual Resources, Lamar Dodd School of Art.  Emy has experience in working with digital media and building digital media databases.
