Opportunities for professional development in research and recognition of research excellence are provided by the Office of the Vice President for Research. The Office of the Vice President for Research provides support services for obtaining and administering external funding through the Division of Sponsored Programs (706-542-5939). A number of internal programs contributing to the development of research excellence among both junior and senior faculty at the University of Georgia are also sponsored. In addition to the Office of the Vice President for Research, several other units at the University offer services, consultation, and assistance in research development.

Faculty Research Grants

Faculty Research Grants, sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research (706-542-5941), support the development of strong programs of research and creative scholarship. They are available only to instructors and assistant professors with tenure-track appointments and assistant research scientists in permanent positions. Such research and scholarship should be oriented to the development of future support from other sources. Expenditures proposed may include general expenses for materials and supplies, essential equipment, travel essential to the research, and certain salaries. Funding is provided by the University of Georgia Research Foundation.

Institute for Behavioral Research Mentoring Program

In conjunction with the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Institute for Behavioral Research, an interdisciplinary research unit, sponsors a mentoring program to develop research skills among junior faculty with interests in the social and behavioral sciences. Junior faculty are paired for a 12-month period with a senior faculty member who will serve as mentor. The mentor will provide guidance in designing, conducting, and reporting research while the mentee, in addition to usual research activities, will complete a proposal for extramural funding. All mentors and mentees will be appointed Fellows of the Institute during the active year. Further information may be obtained from the Institute for Behavioral Research (706-542-1806).

Travel Awards

The University of Georgia Research Foundation (706-542-5944) provides support for travel in connection with international meetings outside the continental United States. Requests are evaluated competitively by a faculty review committee, with priorities based on the importance of the meeting and the significance of the individual's presentation.

Humanities Center Faculty Research Fellowships

The Willson Center for Humanities and Arts (706-542-3966) promotes scholarship and creative activity in the humanities and the arts by providing Research Fellowships to UGA faculty in tenured or tenure-track positions. The Fellowships, awarded in an annual competition judged by the Center's Advisory Board, release faculty from two courses they would otherwise be assigned to teach.

Biotechnology Awards

Biotechnology Awards are sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research to support joint biotechnology-related research projects between the more basic and the more applied sciences, and to initiate new projects which will lead to the development of joint grant proposals for submission to a funding agency or provide the basis for future industrial sponsorship. Support is awarded to faculty members for postdoctoral, technician or graduate student funding; supplies; and, essential equipment.

State-of-the-Art Conferences

The Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost provides grants of up to $20,000 for the organization and sponsorship of state-of-the-art conferences at the University. The grants provide faculty members the opportunity to organize a conference of world experts that will be held at the University and that will facilitate interaction between the conference participants and the faculty and students. Grants are awarded with the expectation of eventual publication of the proceedings of the meeting.

Creative Research Awards

The Creative Research Awards recognize outstanding contributions to research based on a body of research or creative activities that have already received national and international recognition. The Albert Christ-Janer Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the creative arts and humanities. The Lamar Dodd Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the sciences. The William A. Owens Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the social and behavioral sciences.

Creative Research Medals

Outstanding accomplishments in research and creativity are recognized through the awarding of Creative Research Medals. Nominations are based on a research project or creative activity with a single coherent theme. The principal thrust of the project should have occurred within the past five years and be identified with the University of Georgia.

Inventor's Award

Inventors make a unique and creative contribution to the University. Members of the Board of Directors of the Research Foundation evaluate inventions and make this award based on the invention's creativity, innovativeness, and impact on the community.

Senior Faculty Research Grants in the Humanities and Fine Arts

These grants are sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and funded by the University of Georgia Research Foundation. Applications are limited to associate professors and professors.

The M.G. Michael Award

The M.G. Michael Award was established in 1944 to stimulate new initiatives in scholarship in all areas of the Arts and Sciences. It seeks to encourage the development of new (and perhaps adventurous) ideas or projects by faculty in the College. The Award implies faith in that purpose and in the ability of the faculty member selected to plan and conduct the proposed research; it is not given in recognition of previous accomplishments. The Award includes a grant of $2,500 and is given to two faculty members in the College of Arts and Sciences each year. The recipient is expected to conduct the research he or she has proposed and to submit a final report to the Dean fifteen months after receiving the grant.

Cultivar Development Research Program

Faculty involved in breeding new plant cultivars have fewer sources of research support than other faculty in the more basic sciences. The Cultivar Development Research Program, sponsored by the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. and the Georgia Seed Development Commission, is an acknowledgment that exemplary work in the development of new cultivars will increase if there is support to advance the cultivar development program. The rationale of the program is that it will serve as a catalyst to increase support from both private and public sources. Funding for this program is provided from revenues generated from the commercialization of plant cultivars developed at the University of Georgia.

University of Georgia Research Foundation (UGARF) Research Fund Awards

The objective of the UGARF Research Fund Awards is to strengthen and stimulate research at the University of Georgia by funding innovative programs that are broad in scope and will have an impact on the research of a significant number of faculty. Proposals involving the development of new programs, initiatives, or research facilities that will be beneficial to a group of faculty or faculty in more than one discipline are particularly encouraged. Awards can be one to three years in duration.

Creative Development Unit

The Creative Development Unit is a function of the Office of the Vice President for Research and provides resources to advise faculty on commercial exploitation of creative and other written work.
